Book Club

So here's what I've been reading:

1) Paradise Lost by John Milton. As you may have guessed, this was not by choice (does any one actually read this book by choice?), but I did end up liking it. It was for my Great Works II class, and I wrote a pretty good midterm paper on pride vs. humility in Paradise Lost. (At least, I think it was good. I don't know my grade yet.)

2) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. This is also for my Great Works II class, but it's the reason I signed up for this class. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books of all time, and this is probably my 12th time reading straight through it. Lizzie with her sarcasm and Mr.Darcy with his contempt just pull me in for hours and I can't help but laugh out loud and wish for cucumber sandwiches, tea, and a dashing gentleman who would sweep me off my feet. 

3) The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Oh how I cried. I wept. It is so sad. I probably also have highlighted more the half the book because it's just that good. I should have seen it coming. I should have prepared myself better. But I didn't, and so I cried horribly. But I also laughed a lot and fell in love with Hazel and Augustus. Read it right now if you haven't yet. It took me about 2 hours (because I refused to move under any circumstances because it overtook me and I couldn't let go). 

4) Paper Towns by John Green. Another cry my eyes out, but also rip my hair out in frustration because I wanted them to resolve the conflict (which I shall not even hint at, in case you haven't read it yet. Which you should.) It's a fantastic mystery, and John Green does not disappoint.

5) The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald. I reread this for the fourth time in preparation for the new movie in May. I get something new out of each time (the second time was admittedly the first time I understood anything that was actually happening) and this time was no different. I have come out of this not only with a deeper love for Gatsby, but also a huge desire to name my future daughter Jordan. Oh, and I bought a 20's style lace dress. And I'm having a Gatsby party. And I have a Gatsby playlist. What can I say, I'm obsessed.

6) The Catcher and the Rye by J.D.Salinger. I tried to read this in 9th grade and didn't understand and didn't like it and gave up. I'm told I'll like it a lot better this time, so fingers crossed. I'm starting it tonight, and will report back soon.

Avengers Appreciation Post

The Avengers. One of the greatest movies (series, actually) ever made. Joss Whedon, we exalt you for your brilliance. The new Iron Man 2 trailer is being played in theaters now (saw it the other day when I went to see Silver Linings Playbook. Which was brilliant and everyone should see because Jennifer Laurence is brilliant. You will cry. Fair warning.) Consequently, I am in an Avengers mood right now. Reasons to appreciate Avengers:

1) Scarlett Johanson as Black Widow kicks serious butt. You asked for a fantastic girl superhero, and Joss Whedon provided. She ends up saving the guys. She's the only person brave enough to stand up the Hulk. But she stills get her fabulous pseudoromance with Hawkeye after she saves his butt from Loki.

2) Loki. I must admit, I cheer for the villain. Tom Hiddleston, I swoon. (For more Tom Hiddleston action, check out Wallander which is a British detective show on Netflix.)

3) Robert Downing Jr. is his usual perfect genius-playboy-billionare-philantropist as Iron Man. Or is he being himself? Or is he really Iron Man? It's impossible to separate him from his characters. 

4) Intrigue. WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED IN BUDAPEST. NATASHA YOU CAN'T JUST SAY THINGS LIKE THAT AND NOT TELL US WHAT HAPPENED. (I'm sorry, I feel very strongly about this moment and did once spend 48 hours reading fan fiction that attempts to explain these two lines of the movie. There is a lot of it. I think the only solution is a Black Widow/Hawkeye movie.)

5) Hawkeye. He's my favorite Avenger. Bow and arrows people.

Another Marvel movie is booked for this year, no news on what it is though. Speculations include The Incredible Hulk 2, or a solo movie about Clint and Natasha (*which would fulfill all of my hopes and dreams and desires and PLEASE JOSS PLEASE I NEED THIS TO HAPPEN*) or a solo for Nick Fury (*shakes head violently and throws a script for BlackHawk at the Marvel people)

2015:

Avengers 2

Right now these are all speculation (information comes from this article), but it looks like a great timeline. I'm pumped for these great new movies, and I hope you are too.

What's In My Tote Bag?

Hey everyone! So it's raining and gloomy here in Houston today. Since I was of course not dressed for the inclement weather, I am now sitting in the library, drenched and freezing. I should probably be doing economics homework, but the aforementioned freezingness and dampness have taken me right out of my productive mood. Therefore, you get to see what is in my (now totally wet) tote bag. 

I use this giant Kate Spade tote that my aunt gave me as an early birthday present for my school bag. I actually have it in a different print (the red spades), and I love it because while it fits everything I could possibly want to carry, the bag itself is lightweight and durable.

Inside, I keep the paper folders for the day's classes:

Each class has it's own folder, which I keep all my handouts and loose notes in. The color corresponds with the notebook color. I handwrite all my notes this semester, and I love college ruled paper. I refuse to buy notebooks with wide ruled paper. It just feels wrong. I typically like these notebooks:

Since today is Monday and I have lab, I have my dissection kit and goggles. I have a tiny makeup bag with gum, concealer, tinted sunscreen, lip balm, hair pins, and a hair tie in case of emergencies. 

As always, I have my Lilly Planner in You Gotta Regatta (large).

I also have a small Lilly notebook for my to do lists:

I have my sunglasses on their Lilly strap, Scarlet Begonias print (not like I'll be needing them with all this rain)

I also carry my iPod touch that my friend gave me so I can check email throughout the day. This is especially important on days like today, when I have managed to leave my cell phone at home.

Next is my wallet, which is from Sloane Ranger and has been used so much it's kind of falling apart. But it's so cute! Plus, if I were to buy a new one I wouldn't have any money to put in it. (As it is I'm considering locking it in my glove box in my car so that I have to walk all the way out there every time I want to buy something, in the hopes that this will persuade me not to spend any money.Which with this rain might actually work....)

Then I have another, larger makeup case I use as a pencil bag. I have mechanical pencils, regular pencils, 4 different colors of pens, about 8 highlighters (most of which are yellow, though I also have blue, pink, and orange), and small sticky notes. It's jammed full. Quick story: I took a biology test on Wednesday, and as my professor was handing out the exams he looked down at my desk and saw the 6 pencils I had out. He laughed and said "Do you need more pencils? Are you going to be okay?" I smiled and informed him that I had literally brought 30 pencils to my philosophy final and had used every single one, so this was really nothing. (You should have seen me when I took the SAT. It was bad.) I always have this dream that I'm taking a test and all of my pencils break, so I like to be overprepared.

Ahhhhh Relax (i.e. do people ever do this, cause I don't)

Let's face it, I'm a premed business management major. I'm taking 19 hours and I work 11 hours in addition to volunteer work. Relaxing is not something I do pretty much ever. And usually I'm okay with that. I love being busy. It makes me happy. But sometimes, I just can't take it anymore. At any given moment, I'm under enough stress to kill a lab rat. But next week is going to be especially difficult, for many reasons. Let's take a look at my Tuesday and Wednesday next week:

Tuesday:

Great Works II: King Lear paper due. (worth 20% of grade)

(15 minutes later)

Survey of the Old Testament: Quiz 3

(15 minutes later)

Principles of Accounting 1: Exam 1

(15 minutes later)

Legal Environment of Business: Exam 1

Wednesday:

General Biology 2: Exam 1

Microeconomics: CPA #11 due

Work 11:30-5 pm

Yeah. Not fun. I'm a bit stressed. Come Wednesday night, there will be no homework done. I'm going to relax so as not to have a panic attack. Here's the plan:

1) Change into comfy clothes

2) Drink hot tea

3) Eat dinner with family while watching British television

4) Take bubble bath

5) Grey's Anatomy (1 episode to remind myself why I do this to myself)

6) Sleep. 

Ahhhh that sounds blissful. I look forward to it already. And the thought that this is going to happen is what is going to keep me alive this weekend as I study for all these exams and write these papers.

Lilly Spring 2013

I got my Lilly Spring 2013 lookbook in the mail yesterday, and I'm just so excited! Lilly is BACK this season. Seriously, so many cute things. It's a great improvement over the last few seasons, and I'm so very happy to see Lilly returning to their roots of colorful sundresses and the preppy lifestyle.
